A growing GDP, fast dropping unemployment numbers and an increasing average wage have made Slovakia a increasingly popular place for immigrants and investors over the past years. The number of tourists visiting the country has also been increasing, showing that Slovakia is not just an interesting place to work, but a great place to live as well.
There is plenty to see in this landlocked, Central-European nation. Historic towns overflowing with character, ski resorts, the capital city Bratislava that still holds its original charm and isn’t as commercial as many other European cities, the beautiful countryside, mountains, caves and castles all offer a unique experience.
Slovakia is a safe and peaceful place, with friendly locals always willing to give a hand. The quality of living is increasing fast, but the cost of it remains lower than in many other European countries. Many Slovakians speak English, are well educated and skilled and working in the country can be a great opportunity for both parties. Locals gladly take opportunities to learn from expats and immigrants can learn a lot from Slovakians in return.
A work permit is required for all foreigners who want to work in Slovakia. You can get one through your future employer, but there are also other possibilities. If you hold a (temporary) residence card from another EU member state or a temporary residence for the purpose of a family reunion, you can also apply for a work permit.
Permits are valid for up to two years (but can be extended) and are not only employer bound, but also specify the type and place of work. Usually the application process takes about 30 days.
If you are an Australian, New Zealand, Japanese, Taiwanese and Canadian citizen between the ages of 18-30, you may be eligible under the Working and Holiday Visa programme. Note: you may need a letter of government support to undertake this type of visa.
